Working as a book illustrator providing exciting short story illustrations for works by up coming authors is an exciting part of my practice. This image was previewed at the Plymouth international Book Festival. This illustration made for Montgomery Akuofo, Father Of Twins written by Catherine McNamara did look great 6 feet tall at the Plymouth International Book Event at the book launch! Short Fiction is a competition journal of short stories and illustrators are invited to do the chapter heads. This story was published in Short Fiction 6 and was my third contribution in as many years. This one was for ‘Montgomery Akuofo, Father Of Twins’ by Catherine McNamara set in a town on the Ivory Coast. As always its really interesting to research places and cultures which you know little about. This image was drawn freehand with a 1930’s dip pen with washed areas using a Kolinnsky sable brush. The final drawing is then scanned into Photoshop and tidied up.
I use permanent waterproof archival ‘De Atramentis Document Ink’ Black which I get from The Writing Desk, it really is lovely to work with and once dry stays exactly where you left it and the colour doesn’t degrade, whilst this is not important to the publishers of the short story illustrations its good to keep images in my portfolio.
